MYX BANDARITO: 4 Up-And-Coming Acts From UST!

Posted at November 09, 2016

We're putting the spotlight on four up-and-coming acts from the University of Santo Tomas! These university bands are the future of OPM with fresh sounds to deliver. Check them out!

The Modern Playground

This five-piece jazz band intends to reach out to a younger and wider audience. "We want Filipinos to appreciate jazz music as much as we do, so we are really doing our best by spreading our music online and by performing them in gigs."

Faye Yupano (vocals), Juni Sitaca (keyboard), Josh Tulagan (bass), Tim Dadivas (drums) from UST's Conservatory of Music and Kenneth Castillo (guitars) from UP Diliman take "jazz standards from the greats and turn them into new [music] through reharmonization, rearranging and changing of rhythm, etc."

"What really pushes us to continue playing our music are the people who are starting to appreciate and listen to jazz." The Modern Playground also started writing and performing original compositions like "Restless".

Farewell Fair Weather

Founded in January 2012, the soul-fusion indie band is composed of Mic Manalo (vocals/guitar), Gani Palabyab (keys), Kim Hue Jin (guitar), Ethan Muriel (bass), Mark Villena (drums), and the newest addition, Leng Guerrero (sound engineer).

Among the band's songs are "Rough Skies", "Beyond", and "Sakali". It's clear that their sound was largely influenced by Gary Granada.

Where's Ramona?

Mic Comia (vocals), Ivan Castro (lead guitar), Stefan Fortes (bass) and Moti Bernardino (drums) have been performing together since 2015. They played in a couple of UST-wide events including the annual Paskuhan, but the punk-pop band has gained recognition outside the university grounds.

"Having support from your school can help you in big ways," said Mic. "This kind of support gives you a small crowd that can grow into a bigger one where you'll start being recognized outside your box."

FUN FACT: The band's name is inspired by the movie Scott Pilgrim vs The World! Scott had to defeat seven of Ramona's evil ex-boyfriends. "Where's your Ramona? Where's that something/someone you're willing to fight for? Have you found it/her yet?"

Watch out for the performance video of their original song "Kiss Me" this November!

Four Play

Pio Bagnol (vocals/guitar), Justin Garcia (guitar), Bogart Calubayan (bass) and RJ Alfafara (drums) originally came together in 2014 to participate in UST Soundcheck - but the alternative rock quartet decided to stick around. "The band is also pursuing a spot in the local indie scene, and the indie scene right now is so alive."

Four Play is basically a group of playful guys that "your mama warned you about", with songs that deal with the good and the bad side of love.
