MYXclusive: PIOLO PASCUAL And TONI GONZAGA's New Film Lifts Veil On Depression, Suicide
Lance Paolo Lim
Piolo Pascual and Toni Gonzaga's new film is a timely and relevant piece that explores the idea of coping with depression and the possible effects of suicide on the person you would leave behind.
The Bb. Joyce Bernal-directed film follows the story of Mark (Piolo Pascual) - an NGO volunteer who found himself at the lowest point of his life after investing his organization's resources on his mom's company at the expense of jeopardizing the future of thousands of children. Then, he met a girl named Carmina (Toni Gonzaga) - who, just like him, is on the verge of putting an end to her life.
Together, Mark and Carmina decided to help each other in coming up with plans to end their lives in and only in the City of Manila. But each time a design is put into action, the universe wouldn't seem to make it happen. And just when they were about to spend the last night of their lives, Mark confronted himself with the dilemma of facing the realities of living or taking his own life.
In essence, the Bela Padilla-written flick wants us to understand that there is so much more to life than the problems that we face in our everyday lives. In a country where mental health is in grave crisis and an alarming stigma that comes with it, Last Night is the perfect avenue to address the issue. According to global statistics, approximately one million people die from suicide every year.
But just how important is it to have someone to talk to in life? The truth is, we all need to surround ourselves with people who are willing to listen and understand.
