When you think Willy Wonka, only two actors come to mind — late acting legend Gene Wilder and Hollywood icon Johnny Depp. But did you know that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was actually considered to play the eccentric owner of the Wonka Factory?
In an Instagram post, the former WWE superstar revealed that director Tim Burton once considered him for the role in the 2005 fantasy fiction film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
"Some cool history - back in the early 2000’s, iconic director, Tim Burton had considered me to play Willy Wonka is his remake, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," the Jumanji star wrote.
According to The Rock, he ultimately lost the role due to his lack of acting experience, having only been in the industry for a couple of years. "I remember thinking "HOLY SHIT, IM IN" But that was many years ago when I was just starting out in Hollywood with no foundation of global box office strength or any real acting experience to even pull it off. The role, of course went to Johnny Depp, who at that time was the biggest star in the world. The rest was history."
Can you imagine a 6 ft. 5, all jacked up Willy Wonka luring children into his whimsical land of sweets?
