Here's What SONEs Really Think of 2NE1
Karen Jane Ng
With the blossoming bond between fans of 2NE1 and Girls' Generation, we can't help but be curious about their impressions on each other's idols. That's why recently, we asked a few Blackjacks to share their honest thoughts on SNSD and unmistakably, they look at the K-pop girl group with respect and commendation as much as they do to CL, Bom, Minzy, and Dara.
It's just right for us to hear what SONEs think of 2NE1, too, right? And so, we reached out to five of SNSD's stans, and here's what we got:
1. They are musically diverse.
"I think 2NE1's music has a diverse genre. And they are really known together with SNSD here in the Philippines. They both dominated the western countries during their prime years." -@stanSonyoshidae, 22
2. They best represent the 'girl power' concept.
"As a Sone, I envy 2NE1's bold concept, that super strong girl power and female empowering concept 'I dont care if you like me or not, I'm the best' kind of concept. They're really indeed the best when it comes to that kind of concept. SNSD did a lot of concepts, but I've always wanted them to do a concept like 2NE1's for once. Even though they're 'rivals' with SNSD, Sones were also sad nung nag-disband sila since 'yung songs nila are undeniably bops talaga." -Yohan, 23
3. They stand out not just for their music but also for their friendship.
"To be honest I was more into 2NE1 when I first entered K-pop. I mean, who wouldn't be drawn to their catchy songs especially 'Fire' and 'I Don't Care' — they were literally all over parties and TV shows! As a Sone, I love how 2NE1 was one of the 2nd gen girl groups that made K-pop known to the world.
"One thing I love about their group, which is kinda relatable for us Sones also since 3 of the SNSD members are not under SM anymore, is how the members stay intact and close even though they disbanded already. It’s touching to see how they still celebrate special moments as a group, a proof that more than their success in records, it is the friendship and the bond that made them one of the best groups in K-pop." -Lets Miranda, 26
4. They are the only girl group that's on the same level as SNSD.
"All I can say is 2NE1 is the epitome of the Girl Crush concept. THEY INVENTED IT. They were never afraid of experimenting new concepts and genres that have never been done by other girl groups. 2NE1 is really at their peak of career in 2014 when they were the only girl group who can beat Girls’ Generation. When I saw 2NE1 perform together in MAMA 2015, I felt really happy because it's been so long since we last saw them perform as a whole. Even me, as a Sone, [hopes] for a major group comeback from 2NE1. But it saddened me when YG announced that they will be disbanding 2NE1. The legacy they hold will never be forgotten. They were once the ONLY girl group that can beat Girls’ Generation in various platforms." -Jolo, 20
5. Like SNSD, 2NE1 deserves to be called 'legends.'
"As a SONE, going up against 2NE1 back in the day (the golden era of K-pop) was very significant given the fact that both are very popular. I believe that SNSD and 2NE1 are two very distinct groups. 2NE1 for me are the edgy type of group, from their concept to their music to their fashion and even personality. They were never afraid to try new things in their concepts and their songs are always oozing with confidence. I therefore think that both groups deserves a right to be called K-pop legends because 2NE1 helped shaped what K-pop is today.
"Even though I am a SONE—I also like 2NE1 for their highly confident/ music (I mean, who doesn’t feel cool whenever one says the line 'I go by the name of CL of 2NE1') and plus points that Sandara is there, whom I believe became one of those who paved the way for K-Pop to be popular here in the Philippines. 2NE1 was, for me, the 'cool group' while SNSD was the versatile group who can pull off all kinds of concepts. Both groups deserve to be recognized as K-pop Queens." -Kath, 24
Truly, Blackjacks and SONEs may not downright share the same taste in music, considering the proven distinction between 2NE1 and Girls' Generation. But at the end of the day, they still managed to come to one common ground: They both stan legendary K-pop royalties, and we think that's what matters.
