MOIRA Reveals Two Of Her Songs Didn't Pass 'Himig' Songwriting Competition
Before becoming a two-time Himig Handog grand winner, did you know that Moira Dela Torre was rejected not just once, but twice?
Looking back at her experiences and the learnings she gained from the songwriting competition, the singer-songwriter admitted that she once questioned and doubted herself and her talent during that time.
“This is not known to many but before I signed with Star Music, I actually joined Himig Handog twice. I sent songs twice and pareho po s’yang hindi nakapasok,” Moira revealed during the Himig 2020 Live Chat session hosted by MYX VJ Ai dela Cruz and ABS-CBN Music Creative Director Jonathan Manalo.
Apparently, one of the songs she sent was “Dahan Dahan Dahan Lang” which eventually became part of Ylona Garcia’s 2016 album My Name Is Ylona Garcia. According to Manalo, it was able to reach the competition’s top 20 list but, unfortunately, it wasn’t able to become a finalist.
Moira also shared that she sent this song as an entry after losing in the singing competition The Voice of the Philippines. “Sinend ko yung kantang yun after ko matalo sa 'The Voice.' So yung spirit ko sobrang low na and dumating din ako sa point na, ‘Para sa akin ba talaga ‘to’?” she recalled.
However, Moira believed that the songwriting competition provides budding artists with profound experiences, so she decided to keep going. And yup, she made history after interpreting the one-million-peso-winning songs twice for Himig Handog 2017 (“Titibo-Tibo”) and Himig Handog 2019 with Daniel Padilla ("Mabagal").
Now that she’s one of the most sought-after voices in the local music scene, Moira shared that it was a humbling experience for her to be part of the songwriting competition, which is titled "Himig 2020" this year.
“Dalawang beses akong hindi nakapasok sa [Himig], pero yung balik naman ni Lord dalawang beses din, nanalo naman as interpreter. And it’s something that I always try to tell people, not to brag, but to keep going. Great things are bound to happen if you keep going. Napakarami po talagang matututunan sa Himig Handog. Nakakalalim s’ya ng courage mo as an artist," she advised.
So what's the other song that didn't make the cut? Apparently, it's a song that she still hasn't released yet called "Chasing Rainbows," which she sang a few lines of at the 1-hour-and-6-minute mark of the Himig 2020 Live Chat session. Watch it below:
