BRETMAN ROCK Backs Calls To Junk Terror Bill
Bretman Rock is the latest Filipino celebrity to support calls to junk the Anti-Terror Bill which is feared to potentially infringe people's freedom of association and expression.
On his latest Instagram story update, the Hawaii-based influencer spread awareness about the controversial bill. "Basically, the Philippine president is trying to pass a bill called the [Anti-Terror] bill, which takes away basic human rights like freedom of speech," he said in the clip. "People are not allowed to rally. People are not allowed to protest in person or even online without being tagged a terrorist or without being charged for terrorism."
He added, "Philippine people are being charged for speaking up for what they believe in, which makes zero sense to me. People can even be charged for simply donating to funds that is not government-recognized." Watch the video below:
On June 3, the House of Representatives approved the anti-terror bill on its third and final reading. The Senate also approved its own version of the bill last February.
The Commission on Human Rights earlier warned that the proposed bill's "vague and overly broad definition" of terrorism opens avenues for abuse. Meanwhile, Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said elements of the bill were patterned on those used in countries that had dealt effectively with extremism, per ABS-CBN News.
