This Newly Launched Zine Aims to Usher Slow Fashion into the "New Normal"
FAKE zine, a collaborative art zine, is launching their first print, Issue 00: Gangs of Manila, by putting the spotlight on four homegrown designers of brands 02-24 by JEYPEH*, ANTONINA, b.jpeg, and VILQUIN. From June 1 to June 6, 2020, within their month-long online release party, four one-of-one upcycled ready-to-wear capsule collections will be available on their social media pages.
This project aims to lend a hand to the sustainability movement and make custom fashion more accessible to the young market. "Being responsible for 10% of the humanities’ carbon emissions, 85% of textiles are thrown into the landfills each year due to constantly changing trends," states their press release. "In response to that, this collaboration merges the refusal of fast fashion, with slow fashion techniques, creating a standard that is apt for the “new normal” in this COVID-19 pandemic."
The designers behind the brands featured by FAKE are namely JJ Aquino, graduate of the Fashion Institute of the Philippines from 2019, Nina Amoncio, graduate of the University of the Philippines Clothing Technology from 2018, Bea Guerrero, current Fashion Design and Merchandising student of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, and John Paul Velasco, self-taught fashion designer, painter, and filmmaker.
Included in each of their capsule collections are FAKE zine merch in the form of exclusive totes you'd definitely want to snag. Check out samples below:
The 40-paged zine comes in 4 covers, and printed in 3 ways: B&W zine (25 copies, P250 each), Coloured zine (25 copies, P450 each), and Magazine type (25 copies, P650 each). Inside the pages are features on several Manila-based artists and explores the diverse scenes through the eyes of its cover features: Basura Girls, Idioterne Inc., A-team Femme, and Black Beach Boys. Each zine will come with one free face mask from either VILQUIN, ANTONINA, or b.jpeg.
All copies will be released on the FAKE store @thefakezine.shop on Instagram and /thefakezine/shop on Facebook.
