"I always wanted to play a character that was the opposite of the public’s perception of me—and of course make fun of myself. Once I was given the opportunity I took complete advantage. [American Dad writer-producer] Joel Hurwitz believed in the vision and he helped execute it beautifully," Abel told Variety of his guest spot on the show.

But this probably won't be the last time the Canadian hitmaker would show up in an animated show. In the same interview, Abel also expressed interest in working on The Simpsons, saying "It’s going to be hard to beat [American Dad] in the TV cartoon world, but an obvious bucket list would be to work on The Simpsons. That would be a dream—and if [the showrunners are] reading this, I actually have a pretty cool idea if they’re down."

Last year, The Weeknd played a version of himself in the Adam Sandler movie Uncut Gems.
