TONES AND I Looks Back On Humble Beginnings And The Success Of "Dance Monkey"
VJ Dani recently caught up with Australian singer-songwriter Tones And I who achieved massive success with her 2019 single "Dance Monkey".
Like most of us, Tones And I is currently stuck in quarantine but she's keeping herself quite busy despite the current situation. "I'm just exercising, and cooking and writing an album," she revealed.
When asked if she's now able to process everything that's happening with her blossoming career, she said: "I guess now, during quarantine, yes. I guess not really too much. I'm really thankful and everything about what the song has gotten and I'm just very proud. It's really hard to think about it."
Starting out as a street performer, it didn't take long for her to get noticed and land a recording deal. Opening up about her busking roots, she said: "I've always loved music and I always sing at home or in the shower. Growing up I wanted to be a singer and it wasn't until I was like 15 that I was like, I wanna be a songwriter. I used to watch all the buskers in the streets and that's what I wanted to do."
Having a pretty diverse taste in music, she looked up to artists like Macklemore, Christina Aguilera, and Kanye West. Now, she's gotten the chance to be in the spotlight and be an inspiration to aspiring musicians. "It's so crazy. Everything happened so quickly and you know, the only thing I can really do is be thankful and be myself and you know, be the person that I want my idols to be."
From busking to headlining her own tours and music festivals like the recently concluded Play On Fest, Tones shared how proud she is of her current success and says she owes it to the fans who choose to listen to her music.
Talking about her breakout hit "Dance Monkey," the singer shared that she was in disbelief when she found out that the track was doing so well in several countries including the Philippines. "I think it's maybe like, my voice with the bass drop. Like, my voice is naturally a lot higher which is something that happens when I sing and I don't know why and then there's the bass drop that is so low and I think that when combined kinda creates something special." Tones And I also revealed that she originally had plans to visit our country by the end of this year but her upcoming shows had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Hopefully we'll get to see her in 2021 once everything subsides!
