Filipino-Canadian Producer AUGUST RIGO Talks About Collaborating With BTS For "Black Swan", "ON"
VJ Dani just caught up with Filipino-Canadian singer-songwriter-producer August Rigo.
The 33-year-old artist and his wife Ginnette recently welcomed their baby daughter Ruby. Sharing how he's holding up during quarantine, August shared: "I just had a baby, she's 7 months so it's made the quarantine very bearable because there's so much to do.
And just like a lot of Filipinos, his first intro to music was the karaoke. In fact, the first song he learned to sing was Gary Valenciano's "Di Na Natuto". Sharing exactly when and how he discovered his love for music, August said: "If I'm being totally honest, it's the karaoke. Like, my earliest singing memory was like, my mom and my sister and my tita used to teach me. I was really young when I started singing, I think I was about five or six when I started."
The "No Cap" singer is best known for writing songs for artists like Justin Bieber, One Direction, Kehlani, and Chris Brown. Just recently, he collaborated with South Korean group BTS and co-wrote the songs "Black Swan" and "ON". He explained: "That was such a blessing especially in this time. We've been kind of like handcuffed in our homes."
He continued: "I'm also really proud that, you know, I'm an Asian guy in the music industry, it's very fulfilling that there's an Asian group that's breaking through to the mainstream so to be a part of that, I'm very grateful for it. Back when I started, it was an unheard of thing that like, an Asian group is at the top of mainstream media. This was a really great opportunity."
August also shared that he's never met the talented boys of BTS and it was actually Big Hit Entertainment that approached him for the song. "Their label Big Hit, they kind of sent me a brief of what they were looking for and I worked on it. Actually "Black Swan" and "ON", so both those two singles, I actually wrote those maybe like, a couple of weeks after Ruby was born."
