2020 has just begun, but we've already welcomed the new decade with quite an alarming predicament in the form a virus spreading globally. 213 people have already been killed with the number of confirmed cases topping over 9600 across nations, including the Philippines. We're talking about the 2019-nCoV infection A.K.A. coronavirus, which currently has no vaccine for cure or prevention.

The best way right now to avoid being exposed to this virus is by wearing face masks, staying home when you are unwell, and avoiding to touch your eyes and mouth with unwashed hands.

While these everyday habits are advisable to avoid getting sick, it's also necessary to have a strong immune system. Your first line of defense is to choose a healthy lifestyle, every part of your body (most especially your immune system) protects you better when they're strong enough. Here, we provide all the little things that you can do to boost your immune system!

1. Take a Vitamin C supplement.

When it comes to preventing any future symptoms of viruses such as coronavirus, one of the biggest immune system boosters is vitamin C. A lack of it can even make you more prone to getting sick, so daily intake of it is prominently important! You can easily buy some from the drugstore and convenience stores nearest to you.

2. Opt for a diet high in fruit and vegetables.

While taking vitamin C supplements is highly advisable, there are also foods rich in vitamin C like oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, and lemons, which can also help in building up your immune system. Aside from citrus fruits, you should also have some vegetables like broccoli and spinach. If it's possible, eat fruit and vegetables from every color of the rainbow, so you're getting as many vitamins and nutrients as possible!

3. Exercise regularly.

Exercise regularly as much as you can, even if it's just a daily 30-minute walk or a 15-minute run. Excercising is healthy for your body in general which can surely contribute to a healthy immune system. Plus, exercising can also boost your endorphins, which is the feel-good chemical in your body, that will give you more energy throughout the day.

4. Get enough sleep.

You might have noticed that in days that you deprive yourself of sleep, you're more to getting sick. It's because not getting enough sleep can lead to higher levels of the hormone cortisol, which suppresses your immune system to function. So make sure to dial down on those all-nighters. Your body will thank you.

5. Minimize your stress.

Unfortunately, it's already a given fact that everyone experiences stress since it's a part of everyday life. But when you experience chronic stress, it can make you more vulnerable to viruses and diseases. Although you can't always force yourself to be as relaxed as possible, you can minimize stress by managing how you react to and handle situations on the daily.

6. Stay hydrated.

You don't just drink water during or after meals. You have to make sure that you stay hydrated throughout the day in order to be as healthy as possible. It's cliche for a reason because constant hydration helps build muscle and flushes toxins out of your vital organs, which in return makes your immune system more protected.

These tips on boosting your immune system may seem obvious, but most of us only remember this after they get sick. That's why rather than waiting for you to catch symptoms, focus on a healthier lifestyle from now on! Stay safe, kids!
