SAM CONCEPCION Makes Theater Comeback After 10 Years In 'Joseph The Dreamer'

Singer-dancer-actor Sam Concepcion has made his triumphant return to musical theater after a 10-year hiatus via the hit Trumpets production Joseph The Dreamer, first staged in 1989.

Unknown to many, the former MYX VJ (Batch 2013) actually lives and breathes the art form, especially since he came from a family of theater actors. In fact, his father, Raymund Concepcion, was even part of the original run of Joseph the Dreamer!

His mother, Gene, was a resident artist for the Manila Metropolitan Theater along with his father, and his siblings have also followed the family's footsteps, including his brother Red who was cast to play Engineer for the iconic Broadway musical Miss Saigon in the UK.

Based on Cam Floria's cantata Joseph, Whatever Happened to the Dreamer? which was then turned into a full musical by Freddie Santos, this 2020 reimagination takes on a fresh visual approach while still remaining faithful to the musical's timeless theme of love, forgiveness, and unwavering faith in God.

Dubbed as the "King of Philippine Musical Theater," Audie Gemora—who originally played Joseph for 10 years since its 1989 runs—returns as Joseph's father, Jacob, while Bituin Escalante—who was also part of the OG musical's ensemble—plays his wife.

Another full-circle moment for this remake, Paolo Valenciano—who grew up witnessing the magic of Joseph the Dreamer since his father Gary Valenciano played Joseph during its second revamp in 1999—will make his musical theater directorial debut. Sitting at Paolo's right hand as the associate director is another former MYX VJ (Batch 2010)—accomplished theater actor and rising director, Nelsito Gomez.

Musical theater veteran Myke Salomon (Rak of Aegis, Ang Huling El Bimbo) serves as the musical director, while international hip-hop dance champion A-Team's choreographer Mike "MJ" Arda adds to the young roster of talents working to revamp the musical.

Singer-actress and yet another former MYX VJ (Batch 2011) K-La Rivera—who's no stranger to the theater biz (Aladdin, Beautiful: A Carole King Musical)—plays Joseph's love interest Asenath.

Joseph The Dreamer runs until March 7 at the Globe Auditorium, Maybank Performing Arts Theater.
