Chalk Exclusive: "I Am Not Okay With This" Stars On How The Series Tackled Bullying and Sexuality
We are always on the lookout for new series to watch that not only entertain us but also make us feel less alone in our teenage journey. Thanks to the director of The End of the F***ing World and the producers of Stranger Things, we have a new irreverent origin story to watch this season! Introduced with the title I Am Not Okay With This, this series follows a teenage girl named Sydney who's navigating her adolescence while dealing with the complexities of her family, her sexuality, and mysterious superpowers affecting her life.
After having us at the edge of our seats for the past three hours of watching all the episodes, we had a chance to talk to the I Am Not Okay With This stars who take on the characters Dina and Brad, Sofia Bryant and Richard Ellis, as they share to us how they formulate this series to pique every young adult's interest.
Coming-of-age stories are a trope in and of themselves, but I Am Not Okay With This stand out from the rest because it's an offbeat superhero story. Richard says, "It's interesting to watch someone who would go through the struggles of high school and have powers she doesn't know how to control like Sydney. She does not know what's going on with her, so watching her trying to wrestle with those two issues gives it a unique feel."
Besides the unique build of characters, this series also tackles significant issues that most teens face right now, like bullying and sexuality. And instead of exploiting the experience of dealing with this, they did it in a very organic way. Sofia shares, "I do believe that a teen show like ours is responsible for representing everyone as authenticly as we can, so I think that it was important for us to accurately depict that issues relatable to everyone who's currently going through it."
For Sofia, it's necessary to know that what makes you stand out is what essentially makes you who you are. She continues, "People deal with things at different times, but it's never any easier for anyone else. We all still have to go through the same trials and revelations of growing up."
After seeing the characters go through the trials and tribulations of high school, the big takeaway from I Am Not Okay With This is to capture the essence of growing up. Richard wants you to remember that you can be who you are without caring about the opinions of others. "I think it is a show that brings about being comfortable in your skin and keeping the people around you that makes you feel accepted and loved."
I Am Not Okay With This is now streaming on Netflix.
