New SUGARFREE Song Without EBE DANCEL Draws Mixed Reactions
Sugarfree fans have been dying for a reunion of their favorite veteran local rock band behind the hits "Burnout," "Mariposa," "Kwarto," "Tulog Na," "Prom," the phenomenal Ang Probinsyano theme song "Wag Ka Nang Umiyak," and countless others, especially now that the band is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
After their momentous farewell concert Sugarfree: Paalam Pilipinas in 2011, imagine the overwhelming euphoria experienced by the fans when the band created a new Facebook page named Sugarfree Music Philippines and even debuted a brand-new song titled "Nagkita Muli"!
The new single premiered exclusively on Jam 88.3 and cannot be heard anywhere else, according to the local radio station's Facebook post.
Celebratory comments immediately poured in, welcoming the band back to the music scene. However, mixed reactions soon caught up as some fans noticed that the band's lineup only consisted of its drummer and bassist, and significantly lacked its frontman and main songwriter, Ebe Dancel.
"Sugarfree is Carlo 'Kaka' Quisumbing & Jal Taguibao," clarified the new FB page, which dons a simple black-and-white logo with the word "Sugarfree" followed by a registered trademark symbol (®) on its profile picture.
"In 2020, we decided to resurrect the band and relaunch it because we miss making music. Sobrang na-miss namin! Peace and love to all," the band wrote.
Meanwhile, in a separate FB post, Ebe's brother and fellow musician Vin Dancel threw some shade at the usage of the band's name, which could apparently be illegal. "That's cute. They might want to check with Polyeast tho because the label has exclusive rights to the band name under the 2002 artist agreement," he wrote.
He even cited the Eraserheads—legendary Filipino rock band, which also took a break after its lead vocalist left—as an example: "Even the 3 remaining Eheads didn't use the band name after Ely left. Hanep."
"At hanep ang timing lol," he added, seemingly referring to Ebe's upcoming major concert with the Manila String Machine at the Metrotent Convention Center on February 29.
In the comment section, original drummer Mitch Singson seemingly reacted to the issue with a confused look in a photo comment posted by Quark Henares, who has directed some of Sugarfree's music videos: "Ito lang masasabi ng original drummer..."
