A lot of theories and rumors surrounded the 47-year-old actor-director's decision to leave the Batman franchise and not once did we get ourselves a clear and proper explanation from him.
A full year after relinquishing the role which was eventually given to Robert Pattinson, he's finally breaking his silence. According to Batfleck himself, his addiction to alcohol played a major factor in the decision. In an interview with the New York Times, Ben revealed that he was in a very dark place as his marriage with Jennifer Garner was also falling apart: "I drank relatively normally for a long time. What happened was that I started drinking more and more when my marriage was falling apart. This was 2015, 2016. My drinking, of course, created more marital problems."
He was originally supposed to pen and direct the upcoming standalone Batman film before turning over the project to Matt Reeves. Affleck recalled: "I showed somebody The Batman script. They said, ‘I think the script is good. I also think you’ll drink yourself to death if you go through what you just went through again.'"
