4 Iconic Things We'll Never Forget About "Tabing Ilog"
Karen Jane Ng
The year 1999 brought to life one of the most phenomenal teen drama series ever made: Tabing Ilog. It's a show about a group of eight friends Eds, Rovic, George, Fonzy, Corrine, Badong, Anne, and James who love hanging out by the river's dock. Not only did it portray true friendship but it did touch the realities of teenage years including relationships, alcohol, sex, and pregnancy.
While the Philippine TV industry continues to make youth-oriented programs like this, nothing has ever managed to outdo its impact. In fact, it's getting a musical remake next month with Pinoy Big Brother's Kiara Takahashi, Lou Yanong, Sky Quizon, and Lie Reposposa, and MNL48's Belle Delos Reyes, Brei Binuya, and Abby Trinidad as its new cast!
From being an instant classic to introducing today's freshest, Tabing Ilog will forever have a spot in our hearts. Here are other things that our favorite childhood drama will always be remembered for:
1. The loveteams
It gave us onscreen couples John Lloyd Cruz and Kaye Abad, Jodi Sta. Maria and Baron Geisler, Desiree del Valle and Paolo Contis, and Paula Peralejo and Patrick Garcia who defined what falling in love for the first time means. None of them may have ended up together but our kilig from their chemistry still lingers!
2. The squad
More than a four-year run is definitely enough to build a strong friendship. That's what happened for the Tabing Ilog cast which it extended to real life! The case goes the same with former lovers Kaye and John Lloyd who made ends meet by reuniting for a Maalaala Mo Kaya episode in 2015. Exes can be friends, see?

3. The theme song
On top of its beloved stars, the nostalgic track that accompanied the squad's adventure will also never be forgotten. For those who didn't know, it was sung by Barbie Almalbis' band Barbie's Cradle and the singer-songwriter still plays it in her gigs from time to time!
4. The afternoon habit feels
The show used to be aired every Sunday afternoon, and, for our younger selves, it's good enough reason to sacrifice our siesta in order not to miss even a minute or two of the new episode. Tabing Ilog was the best way to end the week where we usually gather with the fam or our neighborhood friends in front of the TV while munching on some home-made merienda!
Our undying love for Tabing Ilog is getting us excited for its upcoming stage adaptation. But, of course, the original drama series remain binge-worthy for one heck of a nostalgic trip. It's a good thing that it's now available for streaming on iWant. What are we waiting for? Let's watch its 244 episodes all over again!
