Eminem revealed how his surprise Oscars 2020 performance all came together and why he was a no-show at the 2003 ceremony where he won Best Original Song for "Lose Yourself".
#Eminem's Lose Yourself was the first rap song to ever win at the #Oscars he didn't attend the awards bc he didn't think he had a chance to win— EMINƎM HUB (@Shadyinfo) February 10, 2020

According to Em, when the opportunity to perform at this year's Academy Awards came knocking on his door, he decided to finally give it a go. He told Variety: "I kinda figured maybe since I didn’t get a chance to do it at the time, maybe it would be cool."
On why he chose not to attend the 2003 ceremony: "Back then, I never even thought that I had a chance to win, and we had just performed ‘Lose Yourself’ on the Grammys with the Roots a couple of weeks before the Oscars, so we didn’t think it was a good idea."
The 8 Mile track still holds up pretty well nearly two decades after its release. During the rapper's surprise number, Star Wars actress Kelly Marie Tran, Captain Marvel Brie Larson and Wonder Woman Gal Gadot were all seen singing along to the Music To Be Murdered By artist. Check it out here:
