6 "Fantabulous" Reasons Why You Should See 'Birds Of Prey'
DC's first offering for 2020 - Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) - is finally here and trust me when I say, you shouldn't be sleeping on this film!
It's comprehensible how majority of fans and critics were skeptical to see the film especially after Suicide Squad failed to meet expectations, but the Margot Robbie-starrer seemingly did a full 360 turn and righted all the wrongs of the 2016 DC teamup flick.
Early reviews of the standalone film have been generally favorable and take my word for it, it will leave you pleasantly surprised and wanting more. That being said, here are 6 reasons why you should give Birds of Prey a try! (Don't worry, this one's spoiler-free!)
It’s R-rated but doesn’t go overboard. Warner Bros. and DC finally took a gamble by turning Birds of Prey Rated R and boy, it paid off big time! The film goes all-in with a good dose of violence and profanity that doesn't feel much of an overkill. Think Deadpool but with a female lead, that's what you get.
The soundtrack is straight fire! The film's OST features banging tracks from an all-female ensemble including the likes of Halsey, Lauren Jauregui, Saweetie, Megan Thee Stallion and Normani. I mean, what do you expect from it other than it's gonna be scorching hot?
It didn’t need a cameo to stand out. Unlike Suicide Squad which featured an appearance from Batman, "BOP" doesn't include a huge cameo from any of the exisiting characters in the current DCEU timeline but it's not like it needed to have one anyway.
Margot and the entire cast steal the show. The film introduces us to an unorthodox take on iconic Batman villain Black Mask (played by Ewan McGregor) – turning him from a notorious mafia chief into a flamboyant and sophisticated crime boss and somehow, it works! As for Harley, she (unsurprisingly) steals every scene she's in! Taking nothing away from the other cast members, of course. Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez and Fil-Am Ella Jay Basco all do great in their respective roles!
'Birds of Prey' learned from the DCEU's past mistakes. After seeing the film, it made me appreciate how DC is now actually listening to its fanbase. It all started really with the success of Wonder Woman, followed by Aquaman, Shazam! and Joker which were all well-received by diehards and film junkies. Now, I can confidently say that DC is finally on the right track!
It proves that Harley Quinn doesn’t need Joker. Like what I said, Harley Quinn, being the film's centerpiece shines even with the absence of her Puddin' aka the Clown Prince of Crime Joker (played by Jared Leto). The R-rating of the film is just icing on the cake as the character is allowed more freedom to be her wacky and unhinged self.
