RICO BLANCO Finally Reveals “214” Meaning After 25 Years!
Local music fans have tried to come up with several interesting theories about Rivermaya's hit love ballad "214" but even the most diehard 'maya fans have been puzzled as to what the song actually means.
Now, the band's former singer and our MYX Headliner for December Rico Blanco sheds some light and takes us to a little trip down memory lane as he explains the true meaning behind the Rivermaya hit, 25 years after its original release.
According to Bestfriend Korics, he intended for the song to have a Beatles-meets-Queen-meets-Duran-Duran-meets-Mr. Big kind of vibe to it. Those are four completely distinct acts but somehow, in the end, the mix of influences worked for the song.
The track originally had several working titles – "The Proposal," "Forever By Your Side," and "The World Could Die, " – all logical and obvious choices, really but did you guys know that it was actually bassist Nathan Azarcon who came up with the "214" title by accident?
"Si Nathan, pumasok [at sinabi] 'Akin na nga, patingin nga ng lyrics.' Nakasulat siya sa isang pad. Tapos lumabas siya ng studio sa amin, he was giggling, sabi niya 'Andun na, may title na!' Sabi ko, 'Ano yun?' Tiningnan ko, 'Ano 'to?!' Meron siyang 2 tapos slash 14 (jokingly relating it to Valentine's Day)," Rico explained.
He added, "Hindi rin siya seryoso pero tinitingnan ko, tapos nakita ko 2/14 sa title tapos yung first line 'Am I real?' Na-notice ko na two letters yung 'am,' one letter yung 'i,' four letters yung 'real.' Sabi ko, baka puwede, so yun na muna yung working title niya."
Eventually, they didn’t get to change the working title and the rest, as they say, is history! Check out the full story behind the song here:
