Here's Why The Ateneo Blue Eagles Aren't Allowed To Play Music Before A Game
"Actually, Coach Tab [Baldwin] doesn't let us listen to music before a game," reveals Ateneo Blue Eagles 6-foot guard Adrian Wong with a laugh after VJ Dani Mortel asked about his pre-game jam.
Well, if you're a big fan of collegiate basketball—or basketball in general—you would think that this is all part of the Kiwi-American mentor's tactics. But Wong and the rest of the champion team are as clueless and confused as we are, and could only share how "[Coach] told us the story about going to work, and they don't listen to music before going to work. That was his story. I don't know."
Anyway, Wong proudly claims that they still do listen to music before a game. In fact, his artist of choice is The Weeknd while fellow graduating player Isaac Go goes with "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers and Fall Out Boy to get himself hyped up.
Mike Nieto meanwhile prefers songs that he can sing, and Jason Mraz' "I Won't Give Up" has always been his go-to pre-game jam since high school. However, his younger brother Matt would rather have a peaceful and quiet time before a game and plays Queens' classic hit "We Are The Champions" afterwards.
It may seem cruel to be deprived of music but third-year guard Gian Mamuyac clarified that they are only barred from playing music on speakers, and can listen to music through headphones. Find out more about how music played a role in the Blue Eagles' Season 82 domination in VJ Dani's MYXclusive interview with them below.
