MYXclusive: KAYE CAL Is Next In Line!
Kaye Cal effortlessly stands out with her distinct voice, but she knows this is not enough to stay in the music business without hard work and constant reinvention!
Singing is something that Kaye (or Karen Jade in real life) has loved as a kid, perhaps taking after her mother who also has a beautiful voice and could play the guitar. She performed in front of a crowd for the first time in high school and played in bars at 17 before auditioning for a talent competition at 22.
Ezra Band from Davao Del Sur left the Pilipinas Got Talent judges in awe after their rendition of "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton back in 2010. 4 dreamers wearing "DON'T STOP BELIEVING" shirts earned 3 Yeses, thanks to frontwoman Kaye's deep masculine voice which sounded heavenly.
Kaye and her bandmates had regular gigs in the province, almost every night with 3 sets that would go until 2 in the morning. Their PGT exposure led to more television appearances and a song called "Walang Iba", but Ezra eventually laid low and Kaye went on her own way.
Her transition to being a soloist was a smooth process, but it was a different experience. "Sa band, ano eh mas masaya sa stage kasi marami kang pwedeng gawin pero pag solo ka lang parang ikaw lang mag-isa don, tapos all eyes on you talaga," she said in a MYXclusive interview.
The big shift also meant changing her music style. Alternative songs were usually her forte back when she was with Ezra. Now, she usually performs acoustic pop love songs like her 2015 single "Isang Araw" from the compilation album OPM Fresh which featured budding artists.
In 2016, she was chosen to interpret the Himig Handog P-Pop Love Songs entry "Nyebe" which won the Star Music Listener's Choice Award. That same year, she joined the ABS-CBN competition We Love OPM: The Celebrity Sing-Offs as part of Nyoy Volante's team Power Chords with Marlo Mortel and Marion Aunor.
"Ay, oh my gosh. Pinasayaw nila ako dun. I can't believe it. Grabe yun," she enthusiastically said. "Dun ko lang narealize na... medyo pwede. At saka ang coach kasi namin nun si Coach Nyoy kaya yung mga arrangements niya ang galing, parang kakaiba talaga, hindi mo ie-expect."
THE VOICE OF SOUL
Ultimately, Kaye looks up to Mr. Gary Valenciano from whom she learned how to deliver heartfelt performances just by watching him, "Yung bawat bigkas niya parang ramdam... emotions lang... yung walang choice kundi pumasok sa heart mo, ganon."
Depth of emotion is also something that she embodies as an acoustic singer, earning her the tag "The Voice of Soul."
When asked about the moniker, Kaye seems to be stunned, not believing what she heard. For her, it comes with a lot of pressure, "Luh? Kasi parang ano eh, everytime you perform kailangan mo siyang patunayan. Syempre ginagawa ko lang yung best ko sa pag-perform."
NEXT IN LINE
Kaye kicked off 2017 with a bang, thanks to her version of "Why Can't It Be" which is included in her upcoming debut album.
"Ang sarap sa pakiramdam na kakalabas palang nung song diba tapos biglang...nag-top one daw siya sabi ni Sir Rox, so wow. Yun talaga yun eh, yun lang masasabi ko dun eh, isang malaking WOW," she said.
The 28-year-old singer is excited to share her own record to her fans, having to personally write two songs based from experience. "Syempre yung mga taong dumaan at nawala..." she hesitantly said about the inspiration of the tracks.
It's a struggle for Kaye to come up with something new everytime but originality is so important when it comes to her music, "Kasi syempre kung yun at yun ang ginagawa mo, magsasawa yung tao. Yun, kung ano yung kailangan mo gawin para hindi sila mag-sawa."
It's the same advice that she gives to aspiring artists: put their ideas into action and not lose their identity because of pressure, "Gawin nila yung kung ano yung gusto nila, pagbutihin nila. As much as possible kung ano yung ideas nila yun yung gawin... may mga taong ang hilig maki-alam eh. Diba? Tapos parang didiktahan ka kung ano yung gagawin mo pero nandun yung originality eh, nandun sa idea mo, yun ang ilabas mo. Kung makikinig ka man sa iba, parang i-inject mo nalang ng konti yung mga ideas nila pero wag mong babaguhin."
Kaye had quite a few memorable shows in her career, being torn between her stints in Bicol, La Salle Batangas, and Cuneta Astrodome, all of which had energetic crowds. But her recent birthday show at La Chandelle is the most unforgettable one so far - all her loved ones and fans called Team Kaye Cal were present and she performed some of her idol Bruno Mars' songs. It was also announced that she's officially a part of PopLife and will make an album with Adele and Bruno's producer Brody Brown.
"I feel blessed and grateful. Kase hindi nawawala yung mga taong naniniwala sa'kin and sa music ko kahit nung mga panahong nag-lie low ako," she said.
In her seven years in the industry, she is happy to be able to share her songs to people all over the world. She continues to strive harder to reach what she's been aiming for in her career, "Everything happens for a reason, even the falling of a leaf. May nakapagsabi sakin nyan dati... Kung hindi man agad-agad, may reason yun... I believe lahat ng bagay may tamang panahon. Kaya para sa'kin hindi matagal at hindi mabilis ang mga nangyayari. Tama lang."
With her positive thinking and commitment to her passion, Kaye Cal is surely next in line! Catch her on MYX Spotlight this March!
