LEA SALONGA And NYOY VOLANTE Stress How Rude Phones In Theater Are!
Can we use our phones inside the theater? The answer is a resounding NO from the theater community!
Legendary Broadway diva Lea Salonga recently ranted on social media about misbehaving theatergoers who ruin the live viewing experience of their fellow audience by using their phones inside the theater.
In a Facebook post, the 2013 MYX Magna Awardee called out ill-mannered audience members: "Not only are you a distraction to the actors, but you're also a nuisance to the other patrons sitting around you that actually want to be there." Her advice? "Do us all a favor and don't come to the theater."
Staying true to her no-nonsense persona we've always admired, the world-renowned singer and actress continued to express her disgust over these phone-users through a series of tweets.
And still, despite everything, there were folks using their cellphones during Sweeney Todd. I hope the earth opens up and swallows you whole, you entitled, moronic c***s.— Lea Salonga (@MsLeaSalonga) October 14, 2019
Yes, you in the second row of the front mezzanine, I caught you and your wayward flash during Worst Pies. May you have explosive diarrhea from whatever you had for dinner tonight.— Lea Salonga (@MsLeaSalonga) October 18, 2019
And now, a ringing phone. During the show. Lumelevel up na. Kainis.— Lea Salonga (@MsLeaSalonga) October 19, 2019
Needless to say, this issue has been quite the topic in the theater community especially recently, after the opening of the much-anticipated musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at the The Theatre at Solaire, staged by ABS-CBN and the Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group as its 20th anniversary offering.
Nyoy Volante, who is also part of the cast of the 40-year-old Stephen Sondheim musical topbilled by Lea and Jett Pangan, also voiced out his opinion against theater phone-users and painfully recalled his worst experience with one, during his MYXclusive interview with VJ Ai dela Cruz on the MYX Daily Top 10.
While listing down the do's and don'ts in theater, the "Nasaan Ka Na" hitmaker also explained just why phone use is such a mortal sin in the world of theater: "It's rude enough if you use [a phone] sa movie house... Theater is different... Theater kasi was meant to be a relationship between the audience and the actors on stage. We get distracted; we're human beings... And when that happens, you take away that gift that we give to the audience."
Speaking of gifts, this much-talked-about Sweeney Todd remake is definitely one. The veteran singer-songwriter describes it as a really entertaining theater spectacle: "Everything about it is creepy but beautiful. It's made in such a way that everything comes together... It's so scary but beautiful. You'd appreciate the darkness."
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Streetruns until October 27, 2019 so you better catch it and see its glorious macabre production! Meanwhile, learn more about the versatile artist that is Nyoy Volante in the video below!
