When it was first brought up that Chris Evans would be retiring his role as Captain America after Avengers: Endgame, we all knew it was only a matter of time before he handed over the responsibility to the next "Cap" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie at SDCC 2019 !!! @marvel We finally know a little something about "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier", Marvel’s new streaming series for Disney Plus. The first details were revealed during the Marvel panel at Comic-Con, where both Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie were present, with Mackie holding the Captain America shield on-stage. Sam Wilson, played once again by Anthony Mackie, is the new Captain America, after old-Steve handed the star-spangled shield off to him, and he’s teamed up with Sebastian Stan’s Bucky to form a crime-fighting duo. The Falcon and Winter Soldier is likely set sometime after "Spider-Man: Far From Home" in the MCU’s timeline, but we don’t know exactly when. Zemo, the villain from "Captain America: Civil War", is back for the series and this time he’ll be wearing his iconic purple mask from the comics. Zemo will be played by Daniel Bruhl who played him in Civil War. The show is written by Malcolm Spellman (Empire) and "John Wick" writer, Derek Kolstad. Kari Skoglan (The Handmaid’s Tale) will direct all 6 of the series’ episodes. The show coming to Disney Plus fall 2020. 📸 : @gettygeek/@gettyentertainment #TheFalconAndTheWinterSoldier

One of the obvious candidates and favorites was James "Bucky" Barnes aka The Winter Soldier played by Sebastian Stan. A lot of fans wanted him to take over the Captain America mantle considering the great history he shares with Steve Rogers. Ultimately, the task was given to Sam Wilson aka The Falcon played by Anthony Mackie.

And to those disappointed that Bucky didn't get the vibranium shield, Sebastian himself revealed that he wasn't in favor of Bucky becoming Captain America anyway. "Why would you give it to the guy that’s been trying to have a whole new history outside of the thing he’s been trapped by?"

Sebastian Stan is set to return alongside Anthony Mackie in the MCU's fourth phase in The Falcon and The Winter Solider, streaming on Disney+ in 2020.
