It's official: James Gunn will helm the upcoming Suicide Squad film. But no, it won't be a continuation of the franchise like fans expected. It's being reported that the film will now be a reboot.

Margot Robbie has been confirmed to reprise her role as Harley Quinn after gaining a strong fan following in the original Suicide Squad flick. Unfortunately though, Will Smith won't be returning as Deadshot. A scheduling conflict forced him to back out of the reboot.

DC and Warner Bros. have found Smith's replacement, however, in the form of Idris Elba.

Hailed by People Magazine as the Sexiest Man Alive for 2018, the actor previously appeared in the Marvel Studios blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok and now he has jumped ship to the DC Extended Universe.

No other details about the film have been dropped, but it's slated for release in August 2021.
