Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic paid tribute to frontman Kurt Cobain on social media after the band's official Twitter handle posted a photo of the late rock icon on what would have been his 52nd birthday.

Krist wrote, "I still have both those records—and a heart full of great memories with a friend."

The Seattle group was highly influential in bringing mainstream attention to Grunge music in the early '90s after the unexpected smash success of their now iconic anthem "Smells Like Teen Spirit" taken from their second studio album Nevermind.

The unprecedented accomplishment of their 1991 album signaled a changing of the guard in the international music scene, with other Grunge acts like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam all dominating the airwaves. Cobain died in April 1994, after committing suicide in his Washington home. He was only 27. He had a daughter with singer Courtney Love they named Frances Bean.
