WILL SMITH Assures 'Aladdin' Fans That Genie Will Be Blue In Live-Action Film
As much as we love Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, there's no denying that Genie was the real star of Aladdin with his witty remarks, flamboyant personality, and signature blue skin. So when Entertainment Weekly released an exclusive first look on the upcoming live-action remake, long-time fans of the Disney classic immediately noticed that Genie (played by Will Smith) isn't blue.
Check out some of the reactions below:
I’ve got some serious issues with this live action remake of Aladdin, starting with the fact that Will Smith’s Genie isn’t blue. pic.twitter.com/nnUNT9tA9i— Karen Sweeney (@karenlsweeney) December 19, 2018
Shortly after, the 50-year-old actor-rapper addressed the public outcry via Instagram and assured fans Genie will indeed be blue: "This is how the Genie is in Human / Disguise Form. My character will be CGI most of the movie."
In fact, the cover story explained that the final version of Genie "isn't quite finished" considering that the film release (May 24, 2019) is still a long ways to go. "I wanted a muscular 1970s dad,” says director Guy Ritchie of how he envisioned the blue-skinned character. "He was big enough to feel like a force—not so muscular that he looked like he was counting his calories, but formidable enough to look like you knew when he was in the room."
The first few images of Genie also features Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine.
