Administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the Order of the National Artists of the Philippines is bestowed on a Filipino who has made a "significant contribution to the development on Philippine art". Among the National Artists for Music are Lucio San Pedro, Lucresia Kasilag, and Ernani Cuenco.
Raymundo Cipriano Cayabyab first gained national prominence in 1978 when he bagged the grand prize in the very first MetroPop Festival with “Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika”. Since then, he has worked with the biggest names in OPM while his timeless songs have been recorded by various artists from different generations including “Tuwing Umuulan At Kapiling Ka”, “Araw Gabi”, “Limang Dipang Tao”, “Tunay Na Ligaya”, "Kailan" and more.
Aside from creating songs for theater, film and television, Mr. C also found himself in front of the camera as the host of the multi-awarded ABS-CBN program Ryan Ryan Musikahan which showcased the country’s finest talents during the 80s and 90s. Today, he continues to inspire the next generation of artists to come up with more original compositions through the PhilPop songwriting competition.
Ryan Cayabyab was presented with the MYX Magna Award during the MYX Music Awards 2012. Check out the tribute performance of Basil Valdez, The Company, Geneva Cruz, Jed Madela, and Asia's Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid below:
