BEN&BEN On Their Breakout Success, Future Plans, And More!
Ben&Ben is regarded by many as one of the finest acts in the local music scene today and we can't really argue with that. What's not to love about the band and their LSS-inducing songs that at one point have either hurt you or made you fall in love?
First achieving mainstream attention last year with their breakout hit "Kathang Isip", the 9-piece indie-folk band (consisting of Paolo and Miguel Guico, Poch Barretto, Kiefer Cabugao, Andrew de Pano, Agnes Reoma, Toni Muñoz, Jam Villanueva and Pat Lasaten) has been unstoppable since, delighting fans with hit after hit.
But just like other success stories, great things didn't come easy for the group. They also had their fair share of struggles and frustrations before getting to where they are today. We caught up with the band's main men, Paolo and Miguel, who told us more about Ben&Ben's journey to the top.
When asked about the massive success they've already achieved in just a short period of time, Miguel humbly answered "Sa totoo lang, di talaga namin iniisip yung mga bagay na yun. We've always thought of the path we're on as a quiet one, only focused on the music that we put out and none else."

but hopefully, the music & the songs will live on in your lives. lablab
Paolo, on the other hand, shared what he thinks propelled the band to their current status in the music industry. "Siguro the only "status" that the band would ever have, is that we're in a happy long term relationship with our listeners. Tipong payapa ang loob namin sa isa't isa."

Ben&Ben's musical style is something we rarely hear from a local act. When it comes to the band's songwriting process, Paolo said "It starts with Miguel's and my concepts, then a lot of humming, weird sounds and phone recordings, which then turns into the melodies and words." Adding, "We make sure that the feeling we feel is clear even sa first baby steps ng mga demo. Then we (the band) dress it up with the musical arrangement. We try to switch it up always and we like mixing weird sounds with familiar nuances."
The band is a joy to see live because of their chemistry which translates everytime they go on stage. A clear sign that they all get along really well. However, Miguel revealed that just like normal human beings, they also get into fights and arguments ranging from petty quarrels to serious ones. "As with every family, we throw chairs at each other," Miguel jokingly said. He then added "We do have our arguments ranging from the petty ones (kinuha mo yung chicken nuggets ko, dibs ako sa upuan na yan, etc) to the complicated ones, but we definitely make sure that everything is talked about in an honest, upfront way."

It's also amazing how the band remains grounded despite their growing popularity. According to Paolo, it will always boil down to understanding one's purpose. "We really don't think much about these things. Siguro malaking bahagi yung pag-recognize na ang artist ay isa lamang na tulay mula sa mga mensahe ng universe papunta sa mga dapat makarinig nito. Also, we constantly remind ourselves of purpose. Lagi naming binabalikan kung bakit kami nagsimula."
What's next for Ben&Ben, you ask? The Guico twins revealed that they're cooking up new music which they plan to release next year. We all should watch out for that!
