KELSEY MERRITT Claps Back At Critics Who Say She Doesn't Look Like A "Pure Filipina"
Karen Jane Ng
Kelsey Merritt has made history for becoming the first Filipina to walk to the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, but instead of having her compatriots' back to support her success (which she rather refer as the entire country's success), few chose to criticize her for not looking like a "pure Filipina." *sigh*
WE DID IT PHILIPPINES!!!!!! 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭 What an honor it is to be the first Filipino to walk in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2018!!! Ahhhhhh I can’t believe this!! Thank you soooo much @johndavidpfeiffer, @monica.mitro, @10magazine, and @ed_razek for making my dream come true!! ❤️❤️❤️ And to my agents at @suprememgmt @nomadmgmt @romanyoung @david_kimm @marissasurmenkow thank you for believing in me and being there for me throughout this journey!! 💕🙏🏼 But most of all thank you to all my followers you guys are my rock!!! And since you wouldn't let her live, here's Kelsey clapping back at you like a real palaban Pinay that she is. "Pinanganak ako sa Pilipinas at lumaki ako sa Pampanga. Tinapos ko ang pagaaral ko sa Manila bago ako lumipat sa US last year. Mas pinoy pa dugo ko kesa sa mga “pure” na hindi pa nakatapak sa (Pilipinas). I love my country and I’m proud of where I came from," she tweeted.

One even challenged her to speak the Kapampangan dialect.
Wa!! Ditak mu. 😂 https://t.co/BckrX6rcgM— Kelsey Merritt (@kelsmerritt) September 9, 2018
Some, on the other hand, came to defend the "unfair" treatment to the Fil-Am model's eurocentric features.
i think people are being really unfair to Kelsey Merritt. She lived in the Philippines, studied there, speaks Filipino, advocates for good causes, and doesn't shy away from her cultural identity.— Karl Zachary ❂ (@karlzachary_) September 9, 2018
Yet some of you wanna shame her because she shares a few features of Westerners.
My goodness this Kelsey Merritt debate should not even exist. She is walking the VS fashion show. She got casted and decided to announce to the world that this achievement is not only hers, but also the country’s. She is a proud Filipina and that’s it.— Mika Garcia (@itsmikagarcia) September 10, 2018
People are clamoring for representation in a realm where it’s not necessary.@kelsmerritt got in a fashion show. Not a film where she plays a Filipina, nor a pageant as "Ms. Philippines"— AND YET, she dedicated the achievement to her home country. What more do you want?— Maqui Castelo (@CaliforniaMaqui) September 9, 2018
She did it. We did it. That's what matters the most. We're proud of you, Kelsey!
