Top 5 Reasons Why We Loved The San Diego Comic-Con 2018
Ai dela Cruz
Every year, more than a hundred thousand people from different parts of the world gather at the massive San Diego Convention Center for the biggest and most anticipated event in the world of comic cons, the San Diego Comic-Con. Often dubbed as "the mother of all comic cons," the SDCC would often have their tickets sold out 7 months prior to its 5-day run in mid-July, making it very difficult to attend, especially for Filipino fans!
This year, MYX was extremely lucky to have scored press badges to attend and cover the ultimate comic con event!!!
Actually, we also had press badges last year but, sadly, we didn't push through since all the hotels nearby were already fully booked months before the event! :( So, after being heartbroken last year, we learned our lesson and booked our hotel early this year! Just imagine our excitement when we finally confirmed we were flying to California, USA to attend the SDCC for the first time!!!
Proudly wearing our Darna, Lastikman, and Captain Barbell-themed Pinoy Komiks Heroes shirts; MYX Channel Head, Mr. Andre Allan Alvarez (left), MYX Director/Producer/Editor/Writer—all-around guy, tbh—Direk Miko Pelino (right), and I represented the number one music channel in the Philippines to experience what the SDCC has to offer and share it with the Filipino comic con fans back home.
Here are the top 5 reasons why we loved the San Diego Comic-Con 2018:
1. We saw our favorite Hollywood stars inside the iconic Hall H!
So Ryan Reynolds attended this year’s San Diego @Comic_Con and lead the cast and creators of “Deadpool 2” at Hall H!!! 😱— Ai dela Cruz (@aidelacruz) July 22, 2018
HUHU I NEVER THOUGHT I’D EVER SEE HIM IN PERSON! I LOVE YOU, @VancityReynolds!!! ❤️ #TYL 🙌🙏😭#SDCC2018Highlights #SDCC2018 #MYXatSDCC pic.twitter.com/y7U3qEy1lS
Hall H is where the biggest panels are held—Marvel, DC, Warner Bros., Disney, HBO, and more! You know those countless long-table interviews you've binge-watched online, where the stars from your favorite shows/movies get really candid and answer questions from fans, with those little black-and-yellow SDCC logos behind them? Yup, those panels happened inside the iconic 6,000-seater hall inside the San Diego Convention Center!
What's even more awesome was that our press badges gave us an exclusive access to the Press Area—a small pit by the stage where only press members are allowed. We were so close that we can literally smell and reach for the celebrities on stage if we wanted to!
In fact, The Walking Dead's Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) was able to grab my phone from the stage and take a "groufie" with me and the other press members right after he announced that he was leaving TWD for good.
To name a few, here are the other celebrities whom we saw in the flesh as they graced Hall H with their presence:
Wonder Woman herself Gal Gadot, Chris Pine a.k.a. Steve Trevor, and Director Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman 1984)

Johnny Depp (in full Grindelwald outfit and persona), well-received young-Dumbledore Jude Law, Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne who plays Newt Scamander, and Credence-on-film-but-Toadette-for-the-day Ezra Miller (Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald)

2. Attendees were given exclusive previews and first look at trailers!
The actors and filmmakers usually bring a short clip with them so that the Hall H crowd will be among the first in the world to watch their trailers! But sometimes, they also bring previews exclusive to Hall H goers' eyes—clips that won't ever be uploaded!
Only 3-and-a-half weeks into production, Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, and Director Patty Jenkins share a short footage of “Wonder Woman 1984” exclusive to Hall H at the San Diego @Comic_Con!!! 🙌❤️#SDCC2018Highlights Warner Bros. 3. Some of the world's best cosplayers were there!
Aside from being ultra-talented at crafting their own costumes like this frightening Ursula we met, they're the world's best also because some of them worked on their costumes for months and traveled from far-off cities, states, and even countries, just for the love of SDCC! We also met attendees whose reason for coming back every year is their love for the community. Many of them used to attend alone, but went home with their now-best friends and even soulmates!
4. The grandeur of the San Diego Convention Center and the whole city!
One of the best things about the SDCC is its massive venue. Located by the San Diego Bay in the Marina district of downtown San Diego near the artistic and cultural streets of Gaslamp Quarter, the 2.6 million square-foot San Diego Convention Center still isn't enough for the whole event. The total scope of the SDCC grounds extends to the hotels and parks outside the convention center, where different immersive booths and activations can also be enjoyed by spectators without tickets!
5. The gigantic exhibit hall!
Imagine the size of about four SMX Convention Centers filled with people, interactive booths, artists, various SDCC merchandise you've been waiting for all year, and everything in between!!!
Catch our whole experience at the SDCC, including the different food and beach spots we visited in San Diego, on MYX Adventures: San Diego Comic-Con 2018 tonight, September 2, at 9PM! Join the fun by using the hashtag #MYXAdventuresSDCC :)
