Unique Salonga has been turning a lot of heads ever since he decided to fly solo.

The former IV of Spades singer and MYX Spotlight artist for August, now simply referred to as UNIQUE, recently released his highly anticipated solo debut album Grandma which immediately earned positive reviews from co-artists and fans alike.

We had the opportunity to talk to UNIQUE who spoke his mind about his career as a solo artist.

On saying yes to O/C Records: Unique told us that the main reason he signed with Kean and Chynna Cipriano's label was because he felt their sincerity and willingness to help not only him but artists from all sorts of genre.

Why he performs barefoot: Apparently, there is no special reason as to why the singer chooses to perform barefoot. He simply answered, "Gusto ko lang magpa-pansin."

On his transition from being a band frontman to a solo artist: The "Midnight Sky" singer told MYX that it was hard for him at first but he eventually got used to it. He also added that it's a fun experience for him to be able to do different things.

How he overcomes stage fright: Known by many to be an introvert by nature, Unique shared how he copes with stage fright. "Hindi mo lang papansinin yung mga tao," he told MYX. Adding, "Isipin mo lang kung ano talaga yung gagawin mo."

On his songwriting process: His writing process varies from one song to another. "Minsan nauuna yung melody, minsan nauuna yung lyrics pero mas madalas akong mauna sa melody, tsaka ko na lang siya tatapalan ng letra." And just like any other artist, he also experiences creative blocks.

How he came up with 'Apoy ng Kandila' and 'Midnight Sky': Unique considers the coming-of-age tune "Apoy ng Kandila" a gift to himself. His debut single "Midnight Sky" is about long distance relationships.

If he's still comfortable singing IV of Spades songs: He has zero problem playing his old band's hits. He even performed stripped down versions of  "Ilaw sa Daan" and "Mundo" during Kean's birthday bash last June.

What to expect from his upcoming concert: According to Unique, he will be dishing out songs from Grandma and possibly a few other songs that fans may already be familiar with. It was just a few weeks ago when he jokingly announced a mock setlist for his show on Twitter.

Meanwhile, a lot of fans were delighted and relieved at the same time when a comment exchange between Unique and former bandmate Blaster Silonga surfaced on Instagram. There seems to be no bad blood and no love lost between the two contrary to what others speculate.

Unique's 'The Grandma Tour' is happening on September 29 at the Kia Theatre. Get your tickets now while you still can!
