The openly gay star seems like the perfect choice for the role of Kate Kane/Batwoman who is widely considered as the first lesbian superhero in comics. The actress expressed her excitement over the project via Instagram.
The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored. I’m also an emotional wreck.. because this is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on tv and felt alone and different. Thank you everyone. Thank you god.
Fans on the other hand had mixed reactions about the casting choice - some were thrilled while others were skeptical.

Us: Wait, no not that one.
Batwoman was first introduced in 1956 but it wasn't until 2006 that the character's origin took a different turn. She was reinvented and reintroduced as an openly gay Jewish woman who has a military background, making her a formidable ally to the caped crusader.
Batwoman is set to join Flash, The Green Arrow, Supergirl and others in the upcoming Arrowverse crossover this December.
