Actor-activist Amandla Stenberg brings to life the issues surrounding police brutality and racism in the upcoming drama The Hate U Give! The Everything, Everything and The Hunger Games star plays 16-year-old Starr Carter who witnessed the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend Khalil at the hands of a white police officer.

The film is based on Angie Thomas' highly-acclaimed YA novel of the same name which sees Starr struggling to balance her double life—the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends—in the aftermath of her childhood friend's tragic death. Now, it's up to Starr to stand up for what's right despite threats to her life.

“It’s about black people, poor people, everybody at the bottom,” she says in a voiceover.

The Hate U Give, which also stars Algee SmithKJ Apa, Sabrina Carpenter, Regina Hall, Issa Rae and more, hits theaters this October. Until then, you can read the book and watch the trailer below.
