'LI SHANG' Character Reportedly Won't Be Part Of Live-Action Remake of MULAN
If there's one thing more ridiculous than the live-action remake of Mulan not being a musical, it's the thought of Li Shang being removed from the storyline. Now, who'd get down to business in defeating the Huns? Mulan's love interest will be reportedly replaced with a new character named Chen Honghui—a "strapping, cocky and handsome" soldier so different from our beloved captain Shang.
saddened to report it’s basically been confirmed that li shang will not be in the live-action mulan.— nerdy (@nerdyasians) April 16, 2018
the mulan casting call has been confirmed to be accurate. donnie yen was cast as “commander tung,” who is in the description for “chen honghui.”
rest in peace bisexual icon. pic.twitter.com/7El8TDhJg5
Fans are outraged over the alleged exclusion of Li Shang from the storyline. Some claim that it was because Disney hasn't gotten over accidentally making him bisexual. Here are some tweets from supporters that basically summarizes our sentiments over the disappointing news:
i’m disgusted. disney is obviously still mad they accidentally made li shang bisexual, so they’re REMOVING ANY POSSIBILITY that “chen” is seen as bisexual. they make it clear he HATES mulan the whole time she’s presenting male. he bullies her up until he finds out she’s a woman. https://t.co/vsj5B9uDGp— princess mizzy 🌹 (@hellomizzyy) April 16, 2018
when u wanna support the upcoming mulan remake bc disney cast a gorgeous, talented actress who's actually chinese to play mulan but they're also replacing bisexual icon li shang with a random misogynistic dude who'll overshadow mulan's journey & add 0 good elements to the story pic.twitter.com/N88ZKz5am8— gabi (@harleivy) April 17, 2018
everything wrong with the new mulan live action:— kat (@katlibra) April 16, 2018
no li shang
no mushu or cricky
a witch is the villain
mulan has a sister?
everything was perfect in the first movie. why is there a need for these many changes?
since li shang THE bisexual king will not be in the mulan live action and instead they're introducing that new problematic character that bullies her up until he finds out she's a woman i don't care about it anymore and i hope it flops pic.twitter.com/HCuL3QivhV— estefany -7 (@brookIynmarvel) April 17, 2018
disney when they realized they accidentally made li shang bisexual by having him fall in love with mulan while he thought she was a boy and that there's nothing they can say now to deny it or change that fact pic.twitter.com/FZWIYqDY8v— gabi (@harleivy) April 12, 2018
amazing how disney is TOTALLY FINE with beastiality and stockholm syndrome and sexism but BISEXUALITY? imAGINE THE HORRORS. pic.twitter.com/NFYn1jRnGi— anna (@bigm00dmyd00d) April 17, 2018
Other fans are already starting to organize a boycott of the 1998 animated classic's live retelling.
I'm starting to lose interest in it if there are this many (and major) changes. We love Mulan because of the tracks and Li Shang being sexually confused throughout the movie :/— Aisyah Yusoff (@nrsyhnssysff) April 16, 2018
As if I'm going to see live-action Mulan if there's no Li Shang in it. As if. pic.twitter.com/kllzcguu6J— Melinda Salisbury (@MESalisbury) April 16, 2018
At this point, we can only pray that the decision to exclude Shang from the cast will be overturned. And if not, then we're back to worshipping the guy as a cartoon, and crying our hearts out while belting out the lyrics to "I'll Make A Man Out Of You".
