Musicians often take inspo from true-to-life experiences. But just like his biggest influence The 1975, movies are the way to go for up-and-coming artist Fern.
During the launch of his self-titled debut EP last March 26, Fern. (real name: Fernando Tan) told us how films became the lifeline of his music.
"I love films. I love watching movies," he said. "I'm only 17 and I haven't really experienced much in the world so I draw my inspirations from films but I also put some of my experiences in it like my personal emotions when I put myself in the position of the characters in the films."
The young film enthusiast added he's into romantic dramas and that might explain how the idea of his debut record fell on his lap.
According to Fern., his whole EP - particularly his single "Are You MIne" - is a nod to the 2013 film Her about a depressed man (Joaquin Phoenix) who develops a relationship with an operating system (voiced by Scarlett Johansson).

Parallel to the Spike Jonze movie, "The whole EP is kind of like an up and down thing. There are songs that are really happy, there are songs that are about depression and all that. It's from the highest highs to the lowest lows," he explained. Listen to it below:
