MYXclusive: EBE DANCEL Celebrates 15th Anniversary Of SUGARFREE's "Sa Wakas" Album
As a huge treat for longtime Sugarfree fans, Ebe Dancel recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of his former band's debut album Sa Wakas. Due to public demand, a second leg of the all-Sugarfree gig is coming this January 27.
During the first show at 12 Monkeys, Ebe talked to MYX about recording Sugarfree's groundbreaking debut album. “We were just really excited to record. Kasi we’re such a young band tapos wala kaming experience sa professional studio.”
And no, they didn't expect Sa Wakas to be a breakout record. “To be honest, goal lang talaga was to release the album so we keep playing those bar shows. Hindi namin na-realize yung cultural, personal impact n’ya sa buhay ng mga tao. It still overwhelms me to this day.”
Sa Wakas gave birth to the hits "Telepono", "Mariposa", and "Burnout" and earned Sugarfree the Best New Artist award at the NU Rock Awards in 2003. As to why they named their first album Sa Wakas, Ebe said it took so long to be released since their album recording was in a stop-and-go situation for over two years and some labels turned them down until they got the chance to work with EMI Philippines (now Polyeast Records).
The all-Sugarfree set prepared by Ebe for the anniversary show was absolute bliss for everyone in the audience. Running for more than two hours, he was able to perform songs he rarely does on gigs. Fans got excited when he played non-singles from Sa Wakas like “Unang Araw”, “Los Baños” and “Fade Away”.
The second and final leg of Ebe Dancel's Sa Wakas: The 15th Anniversary gig is happening this Saturday at 70s Bistro where Sugarfree used to play.
In the meantime, watch Ebe Dancel recall his fond memories of Sugarfree's debut album in our MYXclusive video below!
