American singer-songwriter and rock legend Tom Petty passed away after being found unconscious in his home in Malibu last Sunday by his wife Dana York. He suffered from a cardiac arrest and was then rushed UCLA Santa Monica Hospital. The tragic news was confirmed by Tony Dimitriades, the longtime manager of his band, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. He was 66.

There were even inaccurate reports that Tom already passed away earlier when he was still fighting for his life. It was clarifeid that the 66-year old artist was only pulled off from life support and was in critical condition.

Here is the official statement from Tom Petty's twitter account:

Just last week, the rocker’s band Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers just wrapped their 40th anniversary tour at the Hollywood Bowl last week - a reason why people were shocked with the news. His band had multiple hit records, including "American Girl," "Free Fallin'," "Breakdown" and "Listen To Her Heart.".

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2002 and sold over 80 million records worldwide. He was also a member of the impromptu supergroup the Traveling Wilburys, which included Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne.

Artists tweeted messages of love and support for Tom on social media - including John Mayer who did a cover of his iconic song “Free Fallin’” and The Beatles’ Paul McCartney.
Rest in peace, Tom! Thank you for the wonderful music.
