4 Tips to Deal with Your Anxiety Through Journaling

In a world of social media posting and vlogging, many of us have taken for granted the benefits of writing your thoughts and feelings with an actual pen and paper. We totally get it, it can really be a bit of a hassle to carry a journal around. But trust us, this is a very effective way to manage your emotions whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Here are 4 tips to deal with your anxiety through journaling:

1. Take your own pace. You don’t have to write “dear diary” every single night and jot down every single detail of your day. You can do that if you like. But if that’s too much for you, you can literally just write whenever you feel like it. You can use it to track your habits, organize your to-do list, or simly rant about the things that are bothering you.


 

2. When you write, don’t think about what others may say. Sometimes, we lie to ourselves because we’re afraid that the truth may turn other people off. This is something that a journal can help you with. Since it’s for your eyes only, you are free to express whatever you really think without the fear of being rejected or offending other people.


 

3. Manage your journal on your own terms. You can be as creative as you want with it. You can fill it with lots of calligraphies, doodles, photos, and what-nots. If that’s not your thing, then you can also skip the design and be totally functional instead. You can also pick a hardbound notebook or create one from scratch papers. The point is, you have absolute control here.


 

4. Relax. Just pour yourself into the paper. Let go of the idea that it needs to be aesthetically pleasing or grammatically correct. What truly matters is that you use it in order to help you make sense of the world around and within you. You can look for journal prompts on the internet so that you have a guide on what you can do, but at the end of the day, you just need to do you.

While it’s still better to talk to others whenever you’re feeling anxious, there will really be times when you won’t be comfortable doing so, yet. When that happens, just remember that your journal will be there for you to listen without any judgement.
