1. Take a break. If you find yourself getting lost in a series of destructive thoughts, try to disrupt it. Look for other things to devote your energy into. Take a step back and do things that you know will relax you and get your mind off things that aren't doing you any good. Make a simple to-do list that you can follow and complete this one at a time.
2. Get in touch with the present. Mindfulness is the key. Sometimes, we’re allowing ourselves to stress over things that aren’t even real to begin with. Ask yourself, are you making mountains out of molehills? By doing so, you will see your current situation for what it truly is, and you'll eventually learn how to cope without blowing things out of proportion.
3. Focus on what can go right. Instead of going down the rabbit hole of the things that may go wrong, redirect yourself into what can go your way. Learn how to set your mind on the positive things that may happen and develop realistic plans to turn this into a reality. This way, you'll allow yourself to generate healthier thoughts.
4. Accept that things will never be perfect. Sometimes, all it takes is learning how to accept that no matter how much we try, we won’t always have everything that we want in life. There are times when we simply have to let go of things, face defeat and welcome let-downs without seeing ourselves as failures.
5. Open up. Don’t ever think twice about asking for help when you know that things are getting out of hand. There are instances when all you need is to vent your thoughts to someone who is willing to listen and understand. Remember that you don’t have to figure everything out on your own.
At the end of the day, you have to remember that you have to be friends with your mind. Overthinking can happen to pretty much anyone, but with the right perspective you can ward off these negative thoughts. We believe in you!
