Sponge Cola will be throwing a party the only way they know how via their upcoming show "Sea of Lights", their first major concert in five years!
Composed of Yael Yuzon, Erwin Armovit, Gosh Dilay and Ted Mark Cruz, Sponge Cola has been a household name in the local music scene for 15 strong years now and they practically have done it all but they're still up for more.
The band has managed to remain relevant after all these years with their distinct and recognizable sound we have all grown to love. Their secret to longevity? According to the boys it's their professionalism and the respect they have for one another. Armo said, "We respect each other as individuals and as teammates. We know each other well enough na alam namin yung mga boundaries."
And just like other musicians, they also experience creative blocks having been in the scene for such a long time. When we asked them how they keep the juices flowing, Yael said, "We just kind of do it. Parang, just keep attacking. Part of the process is sometimes you're gonna sit down, write a song and it might suck."
Armo, on the other hand said it doesn't hurt taking a break from doing a project when he feels burned out. "Just take a moment. Breathe ng konti. Take some time away from the project."
When we asked them if they think they've already perfected the formula in coming up with a hit song, they simply said it's still up to them at the end of the day if they think the material is good or not. "I think the best thing to do is to just come up with a song that's nice, that you like and hopefully other people will like."
Yael's "band wifey" Karylle also joined the fun during the Q&A portion and asked about their obsession with the hit mobile game Mobile Legends, but we'll talk about that in a separate feature.
The boys started in the scene looking up to their musical heroes but now it's their turn inspiring young folks to do their thing. Yael said, "It's nice pero ayoko lang mag-assume masyado din, e."
The major concert will also coincide with the release of the band's new album of the same title (Sea of Lights). The band dropped two new songs last January and gave fans a taste of what to expect from their upcoming record.
"Sea Of Lights" happens on March 29 at the Power Mac Spotlight in Circuit, Makati.
Meanwhile, Sponge Cola's "Kunwari" - directed by Yael - is nominated for Rock Video of the Year at the MYX Music Awards 2019. You can vote for HERE until May 12 11:59pm.
